A Gadget for Spotting Fake Viagra, and Other Counterfeit Pills

A startup is building a smartphone-connected gadget that aims to tell you if the pill you’re about to take is really what you think it is by shining light on it. A scan of a known Viagra pill with Stratio’s LinkSquare spectrometer shows that it matches a reference scan.

San Jose-based Stratio’s device, called LinkSquare, is a tiny spectrometer—a device that measures the intensity of wavelengths of light. Since the reflected light spectrum varies from one object to another, Stratio claims it can figure out what a specific pill’s reflective signature is and then compare known pills (data for which would be stored in a smartphone app’s database) to others you may want to scan to see how they match up.

Fake drugs have proven to be a growing problem: last year, Interpol reported that it seized 20.7 million counterfeit medications in an operation aimed at rounding up those sold by online pharmacies. This was more than twice as much as they seized two years earlier.

Stratio has received some funding from the National Science Foundation and says it plans to start selling LinkSquare later this year for $199, initially through a crowdfunding campaign that is expected to start in June. The company also hopes to offer software developers tools to create their own applications for it.

Stratio says it eventually plans to branch out beyond pills to testing other items that can be mislabeled, like food (fish, for instance), and thinks it could be useful for consumers and companies, too.

“We’re hoping people can use this to assuage some of their fears about the things they consume,” says Leslie Grothaus, Stratio's head of business development and communications.

LinkSquare looks kind of like a portable smartphone battery: it’s rectangular, mostly white, with yellow on each end, and connects to a smartphone via a USB cable. There’s a little window on its long top side, onto which Stratio cofounder and systems engineering head Youngsik Kim places a Viagra pill in a demo of the device. A range of light (from the visible to the near infrared) from optical elements in the LinkSquare shines onto the pill, and the way in which the light reflects back across the pill is captured by an image sensor and illustrated in two graphs on the smartphone’s display. Kim repeats the process with two other similar-looking pills, also purporting to be Viagra (one is a generic pill, the other a fake), and their graphs look similar, but noticeably different, to the original wavy line plotted on the bottom of the smartphone’s screen.

There are still a number of challenges to be worked out, such as building a database of medications that LinkSquare will be able to detect. Kim says Stratio is researching other pills beyond Viagra, but declines to name them.

Stratio will also have to figure out how to make it easier to position objects on LinkSquare’s sensor in order to scan them properly. Kim shows me how moving one of the pills to an off-center position can change how the light reflects off of it, and says the company is trying to fix this, especially since it may be hard for elderly users—who could be interested in using LinkSquare to sort out pills.

“Making it more robust is something we need to figure out before it’s going to be sold,” he says.

Mahatma Gandhi was just another Indian creep. When he couldn't get it up anymore, he vowed celibacy. For him, this meant: no penetration, ejaculation. That's easy for an impotent guy. But even impotent men are sexual. For Gandhi, the pervert trickery were his "experiments". Spend the night in nakedness with undressed women, young girls, even female children. Do harmony, but no penetration. Gandhi's creepy chastity.

Suspected Indian paedophile confesses to assaulting scores of girls

JANUARY 16, 2017 - Vanguard

A 38-year-old Indian man confessed to assaulting as many as 200 underage girls during the past 12 years, New Delhi Police official said on Monday.

The accused, Sunil Rastogi who is also a tailor was arrested in eastern Delhi over the weekend after investigations into sexual attacks on young girls led the police to him.

The police said that they are still investigating the admission by Rastogi.

“The suspected paedophile travelled in and out of Delhi.

“He allegedly lured girls between 7 and 11 years old to isolated places, telling them he wanted to gift them or their parents clothes, the police said.

East Delhi Police Chief Omvir Bishnoi said that the police were currently probing 60 cases of molestation and rape that could be linked to Rastogi across Delhi and surrounding areas.

“As of now investigations have confirmed his involvement in seven such criminal cases.

“During interrogation he has claimed to have assaulted many more girls, that we estimate up to 200 girls. We are looking into the confessions and verifying them.

“Bishnoi denied media reports that said that, during police questioning, Rastogi admitted to targeting as many as 500 children,’’ he said.

The confessions have baffled police, who are taken aback at how Rastogi went undetected for so long.

Rastogi was jailed in 2006 for six months in Rudrapur city, some 250 km East of Delhi, where he lives, for sexually assaulting a girl while she was working at a farm.

Following Rastogi’s arrest this weekend, women’s rights activists demanded strict action against the alleged sexual predator, with some calling for the death penalty.

Feminism is about the domestication of men. Feminism wants to force men into being docile, so women have all sexual rights, at no risk. That will be all the less feasible the more violence there is in a society.

Suicide methods (Lost All Hope)

Lost All Hope has a library of information on methods to commit suicide, including dangers of individual methods and their reliability, and statistical information on which methods are most successful.

In researching this site I was struck by how much has been written on suicide methods. Numerous bulletin boards with long discussions over different methods (often by people who had tried various methods of poisoning and failed), books and websites. I found it strange that there was so much discussion, in the face of very easy to obtain statistics on the most sure-fire ways of committing suicide (see Most lethal methods of suicide and Suicide statistics).

The holy grail seems to be painless methods of suicide, and people will go to great lengths to find a method that might achieve that. The perversity being that huge numbers of these attempts end up unsuccessful, as the clean, relatively painless methods are often not done in such a way so as to make them lethal. And many of these people end up in hospital requiring treatment for their failed attempt.

The figures presented in the section Suicide statistics would indicate that for every successful suicide attempt, there are 33 unsuccessful ones. For drug overdoses, the ratio is around 40 to 1. In fact, if attempting suicide, there is a much greater chance you'll end up in hospital alive, with either short or long term heath implications, than dead.

So if you are reading this more worried about finding a pain free method than an effective method, you'd be well advised to read carefully the information on the dangers of the suicide methods mentioned on this site, then perhaps look at Help me, because you are much more likely to hurt yourself by attempting suicide than to succeed killing yourself.

For anyone committed to killing themselves, achieving the goal can be straightforward if a reliable method is chosen. The major problems are often not with the logistics, but rather the internal self analysis, and thoughts of how others will react (our behaviour is affected by how we think others will react). For many people contemplating suicide, they have a real desire to end their lives, but it is the fear of what their death might feel like that keeps them from doing it.

To read more about individual methods of suicide, please select from the left hand menu. Yes, there are methods not mentioned there. In almost every circumstance because they are either not reliable or very difficult to execute. Therefore, those considering unusual methods should be warned - there is a reason why they are not written about much.

Abstract

Lepidium meyenii (Maca) is a Peruvian hypocotyl that grows exclusively between 4000 and 4500 m in the central Andes. Maca is traditionally employed in the Andean region for its supposed aphrodisiac and/or fertility-enhancing properties. This study was a 12-week double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel trial in which active treatment with different doses of Maca Gelatinizada was compared with a placebo. The study aimed to test the hypothesis that Maca has no effect on serum reproductive hormone levels in apparently healthy men when administered in doses used for aphrodisiac and/or fertility-enhancing properties. Men aged between 21 and 56 Years received 1500 mg or 3000 mg Maca. Serum levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, prolactin, 17-alpha hydroxyprogesterone, testosterone and 17-beta estradiol were measured before and at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks of treatment with placebo or Maca (1.5 g or 3.0 g per day). Data showed that compared with placebo Maca had no effect on any of the hormones studied nor did the hormones show any changes over time. Multiple regression analysis showed that serum testosterone levels were not affected by treatment with Maca at any of the times studied (P, not significant). In conclusion, treatment with Maca does not affect serum reproductive hormone levels.

Father gets life in prison for son's torture death

Walbs News 10

KANSAS CITY, KS (WDAF/CNN) - Michael Jones was sentenced to life in prison Monday for torturing and killing his 7-year-old son, Adrian.

A shocked community is still wondering what could have been done to prevent the tragedy.

"I want to forgive him. I can tell I do, but I just don't think it is the right time to," said Keiona Doctor, Adrian's sister.

She was just 9 years old when her mother hooked up with Michael Jones. She said she did her best to protect her little brother from abuse until the couple split up and Michael Jones took the toddler boy.

Evidence gathered by police shows that from there, Adrian's life was filled with endless torture at the hands of his father and stepmother Heather Jones until the 7-year-old's body gave out from all of the abuse and starvation.

His remains were fed to pigs, the Associated Press said.

"The worst part for me is there were people that saw what happened to him, or at least had an idea, and they never called the police. One visit from police there would have saved him," detective Stuart Littlefield said.

He responded to a domestic call at the Jones's house in November 2015, along with his partner, detective Brad Lancaster. The two never expected the horror they would find inside the home that became Adrian Jones's prison.

Lancaster was murdered before he could see Adrian get justice.

"We all worked this case together, but it became Brad's obsession," Littlefield said.

"Worst thing that I have ever had to see at this point in my career, and I hope to never see anything this bad again," detective Mark Bundy said.

Police who worked this case, Adrian's sister, mother and grandmother all spoke at Michael Jones' sentencing, while Jones sat with his back to them, no reaction, no emotion.

Judy Conway, Adrian's maternal grandmother, said she believes "he has no remorse, either that or he was just totally embarrassed by what he had done. I'm not sure. I wish I did know. I just, I don't think I ever want to go into evil's mind like that and try to figure out what exactly they are thinking."

Adrian's stepmother is also serving a life sentence in his murder.

She took several photos and video of the abuse against Adrian, which was used to help convict them both.

Red Light Area of Nepal

A young woman, Priya (name changed), 20 years of age, is in a hurry to get to the office. The sun's rays are spreading everywhere, but because of the black glass there is no way for them to penetrate into her office, where a 25-watt red bulb illuminates a 10 ft-by-8 ft room.

She has told others she is working in a travel agency, but actually she is working in a Cabin Restaurant. Yes, the dark room is the "Cabin" to attract customers. When a customer comes into her office, she asks, "What kind of service do you want from me?"

Sunita (name changed) works in an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), whose objective is to raise awareness of STDs and HIV/AIDS. This girl, who spreads awareness, is herself a sex worker.

Shila (name changed), mother of a one-year-old daughter, lives in Kathmandu. Her husband died six months ago. After his death, she worked in a carpet factory. At the same time, her daughter got sick. So, she started a sex business to pay for her daughter's treatment because her wages from factory work were not enough.

Shila doesn't work in the Cabin Restaurant, but one of her friends, Priya, brings her Cabin Restaurant customers to her (Shila's) rented house, where she has sexual relations with them for the sake of her daughter.

Either working in a Cabin Restaurant or in the background as a prostitute, the attitudes of these three girls are totally different from each other. One thing is consistent ?- they all work as prostitutes, directly or indirectly.

An NGO named New Era has done research about prostitution in Kathmandu, according to which there are more than 5,000 prostitutes, just in the Kathmandu valley alone. Among them, only 12 percent do safe sex with condoms, so it is clear that the rest may be suffering from HIV/AIDS. Most enter this profession at the age of 21.

The profession isn't seen as a formal job but also it has established actually. A business can be opened by calling it a "Restaurant and Bar," but then most of the restaurants add the word "Cabin."

In Kathmandu valley alone, there are about 4,000 Cabin Restaurants and 3,000 Dance Restaurants, which have given employment to 100,000 girls directly (working whole days) or indirectly (part time).

The direct meaning of "Cabin" is that girls are available here, and the total tab can be three times what it is in other local restaurants. As to why this would be, one of the proprietors of a Cabin Restaurant said, "We have to give hafta (a weekly payment) to the police and incentives to the girls."

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all provided for the girls by the restaurant as well as NRs 150 (US$2) for taxi fare. Their wage is no more than NRs 3,000 (US$40.54). Their extra income is from tips and, possibly, a commission of NRs 50 if they take an order for an expensive dish, and the amount from a one-night stand with a customer. They get NRs 500 (US$6.76) to 1000 (US$13.51) for a one-night stand.

According to research by New Era, the regular customers of a Cabin Restaurant are mostly businessmen, professionals, drivers, soldiers, restaurant proprietors, etc. Nowadays, workers returning from Gulf countries are the main patrons of such restaurants.

If they run out of money while there, they're asked to leave their passports and visas, watches, gold chains and rings as collateral, to be returned after settling.

According to the proprietor of a Cabin Restaurant located in Gaushala, more than 50 (age) cross people come in the restaurant only for the special girl they want. Their number will decrease as the leave of their required girl.

New Era reports that the places where prostitutes are easily found are Cabin Restaurants, Dance Restaurants, roadhouses, lodgings, and liquor stores ("Bhatti" in Nepali). Most of these girls are from remote places like Nuwakot, Jhapa, Dhadhing, Sunsari, etc.

On average, the girls involved in sex work are around the age of 16. These girls get 500 to 1000 in general for one-time sex. The professionals, though, get more. They prefer to go to beautiful places like Pokhara, Nagarkot, Chitwan, or Dhulikhel, according to the desire of the customer, either by motorbike or car.

In Cabin Restaurants, the customers are divided up into groups of five per girl, so that one girl has to look after five customers. New Baneshwor, Battisputali, Gaushala, Chabahil, and Gongabu are the districts in Kathmandu where most Cabin Restaurants are to be found.

The Secretary of the Nepal Restaurant Organization, Yogendra Chaulagain, said, "Only a small number of women have complained of not getting paid." It means that most of the girls are satisfied with what they get. Ten years ago, Cabin girls would be raped by the owner of the restaurant. Now, neither owner nor customer does anything without their permission.

Priya said, "No one can even touch us without our permission. But there is the compulsion of sex work for the sake or our stomachs." She also added, "We don't have to worry about the job. If we leave our job in the morning, we can get back to it in the evening."

If the customer wants a call girl, the waitresses are ready to fetch a Cabin girl. Without hesitation, Priya said, "My customers are not only adults but also school agers, who give me NRs 500 for a one-night stand."

In 2002, Maoists campaigned to close these Cabin Restaurants, knowing how the girls were exploited. Far from succeeding, they've been flourishing instead. Someone has said, "I found one Maoist worker inside a Cabin Restaurant. If they themselves are going there, how can they close it?"

Everyone is aware of what happens in these Cabin Restaurants. Former Minister Sarad Singh Bhandari has said that if people have made a tacit agreement about these Cabin Restaurants, then why don't we manage them in an open way?

If the government respects this sex business or declares it a "Red Light Area," everyone involved in it would not have to be cheated socially, economically, or physically.
